2025 Application for admission to the Math to Power Industry Workshop
The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce that applications for participation in the Math to Power Industry Workshop (M2PI) are now open. Applications will close on April 11, 2025 at 11:59 pm Mountain. Students will be notified of their acceptance to the program no later than April 18, 2025, and will be expected to accept their registration immediately (no later than April 25, 2025).
The Math to Power Industry Workshop includes professional skills training and an opportunity to work as part of a team on an industrial problem. During the workshop, we also offer opportunities to access mentors working in academia and industry and upcoming job openings or internship possibilities. Students who participate in this workshop gain real experience which helps to demonstrate that your academic skills are transferrable to industry.
The workshop will be convened virtually from May 5 - 23, 2025. It is a full-time workshop and most activities will take place from 9am - 4pm MT daily. Before the workshop begins, you are invited to review our kit for Python self-study. During the first week, participants will learn core business competencies including digital collaboration, communication, effective teams, and ethics. During the last two weeks, participants will work in teams with non-academic mentors from industry, government or the not-for-profit sector to solve a business problem using mathematics. Past problems from M2PI workshops can be found on the M2PI archive pages for 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 (click the year to access the relevant page). This year's problems will be updated and posted on the M2PI 2025 workshop page as they become available. We are excited to welcome
and we expect to welcome a few more partners in the coming weeks.
You will be able to express a preference for which team you would like to work on during the first week of the workshop, and final team assignments will take your preference and your skill set into account. We are tentatively planning an IN PERSON event on May 28, 2025 in Saskatoon during the second PIMS Industry Day. Teams will have the opportunity to present their work to members of the public (including our industry partners).
Students who participate in the M2PI workshop will have access to all M2PI events, including training, networking, and career advice. Students who complete the program will receive a certificate of accomplishment as a fellow of the M2PI program.
Applications are encouraged from current and recent graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from PIMS Universities. Priority will be given to students at PIMS universities seeking non-academic employment in the near term, or those available to work as interns while completing their programs. In addition to this application, students who are currently enrolled must ask an advisor or supervisor to indicate that they support the choice to participate in the workshop full time during May 5 - 23. In rare cases, highly skilled undergraduates are admitted to the program - letter-writers for undergraduates should also address the undergraduate student's qualifications and relevant skills. Please ask an advisor or supervisor to submit letters directly to this address

by April 15, 2025. Applicants who are not currently enrolled as students (including postdoctoral fellows) do not need to request a letter of support.
